Lawrence Mahan, Ph.D.

Dr. Mahan brings his passion to the Biotechnology Institute for entrepreneurial development and science education from his past accomplishments as a successful business professional in both scientific research and the innovation management of advanced biomedical technologies. His specialties include technology evaluation, entrepreneur guidance and business strategy creation with a domestic and international track record in business alliance development.  His expertise draws upon more than 20 years as an accomplished senior scientist in biomedical research spanning the University of California, San Diego and later, the National Institutes of Health where he elucidated the genetic subtypes of a number of CNS neurotransmitter receptors as novel targets for drug development.  

His research has encompassed cellular and molecular biology, pharmacology, functional genomics, proteomics, neuroscience, immunology and biochemistry with additional experience in biomedical device engineering principals, bioinformatics and IT architectural management.  His business experience includes co-founder of an emergent biotechnology company and encompasses executive management positions as Director of the Office of Translational Alliances and Coordination at the National Heart, Lung and Blood, Director of Innovation and Business Development for Children’s National Medical Center and its research institutes, the Children’s Research Institute and the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, Director of Biosciences & Advanced Technologies at Maryland’s Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED), Senior Strategy Advisor to DBED and the Office of the Governor, and joint appointment to the Office of Research and Development at the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute. 

As a business consultant to the pharmaceutical industry and academia, he has provided guidance on multi-disciplinary research programs, bioscience facilities development and technology platform development in CNS drug discovery and functional genomics, and evaluation and business/IP/regulatory case development for advanced biomedical technologies.  Dr. Mahan received his doctorate in Physiology and Pharmacology from the University of California, San Diego and has authored more than 100 published articles and abstracts and holds four US patents.  He has been an invited speaker globally on his scientific research and industry development in the biosciences.
