Serono Supports Their Local Educators through Teacher–Leader Program
Serono, Inc., a leading global biotechnology company, is supporting professional development for educators in their community of Rockland, Mass. through a $100,000 grant to the Institute’s National Biotechnology Teacher–Leader Program. The funding will support a pilot program in the South Shore area, where Serono has had their U.S. headquarters for the past 25 years, that encourages students to participate in a BioDreaming Poster Competition, help local teachers integrate biotechnology into their classrooms, and experience biotechnology first hand through tours of the Serono facility. Up to 10 teachers will be recruited for the Teacher–Leader Program at the 2005 Biotechnology Institute Education Conference in Philadelphia, where they will participate in three days of hands–on professional development sessions and biotech–related site visits in the area, followed by the opportunity to attend the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) 2005 Convention. The Institute wishes to thank Serono for their generous support of this program.

Institute Workshops Major Draw at Education Conventions
The Institute is continuing to build awareness and understanding of biotechnology among teachers and students through professional development sessions at major education conventions. November’s National Science Teacher’s Association (NSTA) Regional Convention in Richmond, Va. marked the first time the Institute conducted a workshop at the regional level–and the experience was a major success. Kathy Frame, with support from local Teacher–Leaders Susan Senn and Alenka Hlousek-Radojcic, directed two sessions that drew a combined audience of 150 teachers! As a result of the overwhelming response, the Institute will develop a biotechnology program strand for all three NSTA regional meetings next year–providing us with an opportunity to reach hundreds of teachers. The National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) annual meeting in Chicago last November was the site of another Teacher–Leader workshop that was a major attraction for attendees. Many thanks to Teacher–Leader Tim Leffler and colleagues Scott Collins and Tim Plotke for providing on-site help.
Biotechnology Institute Welcomes New Employees
The Institute kicks off the New Year by welcoming two new employees. Erin Payne joins the staff in the newly created role of Events Manager. Payne, who was previously a Conference Planner for Standard Technology Inc. in Falls Church, Va., will manage logistics for the Biotechnology Institute Education Conference, in addition to other events and forums throughout the year. Sidnitra Bates is the new administrative assistant on the Educational Programs team, where she will provide program and project support. Welcome Erin and Sidnitra!
