Teach BioScience! is a national eduction conference that is an ideal professional development opportunity for science and CTE educators and administrators at middle schools, high schools, two-year colleges and universities who are actively engaged in teaching students life science and biosciences at pre-college levels!

Based on the nationally-renowned National Biotechnology Teacher-Leader program, the conference contains seven unique programs that can be attended as an entire package, or participants can pick and choose from each of the seven programs.

How to Register
Program prices begin at $65, depending on the sessions you select and when you register. Feel free to piece together a program that meets your professional development needs or purchase the entire program, with AdvaMed, for $2,015 (if registered by September 6). You can also register for the educational package, without AdvaMed, for $1,320. The program has a room block reserved at centrally located hotel with a special group rate. The standard rate is until September 6.

The seven programs are:

Biosciences Wet Lab Program
October 15-16, 8:30am–4:30pm
McKinley Technology High School
Washington, DC

Take on the role of a student as Master Teachers guide you through biotech wet-labs. You can choose from one of three different levels: Fundamentals, Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology, and Healthcare Biotechnology. The labs are standards-based and generally can be used with low-cost everyday supplies and equipment. The Master Teachers will guide you through discussions about how to integrate biotechnology into your curriculum and how to expand these labs to become entire courses.

Marketplace Networking Reception
October 16, 5:30-7:30 pm
McKinley Technology High School
Washington, DC

Network with biotechnology educators from around the United States during this event and compare notes on how best to teach biotechnology. Biotech Wet-Lab Master Teachers will be on hand to answer questions and vendors of biotechnology curriculum, supplies and equipment will share what they have to offer.

Cost: Early Bird - $65; Advance - $80; Full - $90. The reception is free if you are registered for any other of the conference events.

Best Practices in Bioscience Education
October 17, 8:30am–3:30 pm

This session showcases exemplary biotechnology education programs from around the country. Throughout the day there will be a number of break-out sessions so that you can pick the sessions that most meet your needs. Sessions include hands-on labs, community-based programs, internet-based activities and resources, and much more! There will also be a general session about the Biotechnology Institute’s successful Scientists in the Classroom and the sanofi-aventis International BioGENEius Challenge.

Outreach Training and Fundraising Boot-camp Dinner

Spend an evening in an interactive session where you will learn from experts about how to work with businesses and community-based organizations to get resources (financial and in-kind) for your school or district. Government grant experts will discuss how to go about securing federal, state and local support. Educator professional development veterans will discuss ways to share what you are doing with colleagues, both formally and informally.

State-of-the-Art of Biotech Research Seminar

Washington, DC

Join leading researchers who are working on the cutting edge of biotechnology research and development to learn where the science is going in the areas of therapeutics, diagnostics, environmental science, energy, healthcare and agricultural biotechnology. The top scientists will also help you help you learn how to direct your classroom instruction and give your students a sense of excitement about life science, the science of the 21st century.

Biotech Company Tour

Various Companies in the Washington, DC metro area

The best way to learn what it is like to work in an applied life sciences company is to visit one. In this program you will travel to a leading biotech company and meet with their scientists and learn what they are working on and where they are going with their research. You will visit the labs and their other facilities and gain an understanding of the work environment. This will allow you to better be able to articulate to your students the nature of careers in biotechnology, whether it be for work as a lab-tech, a bench scientist, or other jobs in biotechnology.

AdvaMed 2010
October 18-20
Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Washington, DC

The annual meeting of the Advance Medical Technology Association is a three-day meeting of executives from medical equipment manufacturers. Take advantage of myriad activities, including an exhibit hall, where you can make connections with suppliers of medical equipment. AdvaMed has concurrent sessions that explore applied life sciences in the areas of molecular diagnostics, point-of-care testing, regenerative medicine and much more. All this is coupled with global leader plenary speakers and a variety of social networking events to make this a must-do program.
