Operation Biotechnology
Sponsorship
Operation Biotechnology is a nationwide project funded by a FIPSE grant from the U.S. Department of Education that develops engaging biotechnology teacher training curriculum and experiments that integrate biology, chemistry and physics content. In year-round professional development workshops, high school teachers are trained to modify their existing courses and, using an easily replicable "teacher-leader" model, these master teachers will disseminate programs and labs to their colleagues. Participating teachers attend the Institute’s Teacher-Leader program, the BIO International Convention and special training during the BIO convention about how to do professional development for their colleagues. For the next year the Operation Biotechnology teachers participate in a web-based portal with other Operation Biotechnology teachers. They are given $700 in stipends after they complete a workshop back in their school distract and after they implement the rigorous evaluation program to measure changes in student knowledge. They are also given an allowance of $11000 to spend on supplies, materials, and equipment.
